On October 9, 2023, Travis Gienger from Anoka, Minnesota set the world record for the heaviest pumpkin ever, at 2749 pounds.

Gienger revels in his victory at the 50th World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off held in Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco. Clad in an orange long-sleeve shirt and matching shoes, he raised his right fist triumphantly before an excited audience of spectators and photographers.

He received not only pride of achievement, but also earned $9 per pound (totaling $24,741) as well as an amazing $30,000 “mega prize” for setting a new world record.

Gienger outweighed his predecessor by 47 pounds. According to reports, he gave his plants extra care this year by applying extra fertilizer and watering them multiple times every day.

Growing giant pumpkins takes both time and effort; unfortunately, most pumpkin growers fail in this effort. Some key factors for successfully cultivating giant gourds include selecting an appropriate seed, watering regularly, burying vine nodes under mulch layers, and harvesting additional pumpkins from your plant. When selecting seeds it is important to understand how genetics were passed onto it from its parents; knowing this information may assist in choosing an ideal option to plant.
