Optimizing Humidity Levels in Your Greenhouse

Misting Guidelines
Apply mist only during daylight hours to avoid excess humidity at night that encourages disease. Remember that as greenhouse temperature drop overnight, relative humidity will still rise even without misting being used – use a 24-hour timer to turn off misting two hours prior to sundown for best results.

Shade and ventilation alone cannot keep a greenhouse cool during summer; misting systems provide effective evaporative cooling that is the key to reaching an enjoyable temperature within.

Humidity Control
As greenhouses warm and venting begins, moisture evaporates out with the venting air, leading plants to rapidly lose moisture and start wilting. A misting system can provide extra hydration needed for healthy humidity levels between 50-70%.

Design for Cooling & Humidity Control
Install one 2 or 3 gallon per hour (gph) nozzle per 12 to 14 square feet of greenhouse floor area. Be sure to install these under benches so as to prevent plants from getting wet from direct sunlight, then point these nozzles up, down, sideways or 45 degree angles as necessary – controlling this system using a humidistat is recommended.

Overhead Watering
Many foliage plants, tropicals and subtropicals can be watered and fertilized through an overhead misting system using two gallon per hour (gph) nozzles installed as high as possible and controlled with a short cycle timer.

Propagation/Orchid Misting Whilst keeping humidity between 60-70% for healthy plants is best, use 1 GPH Nozzles instead and set a short cycle timer that mists for 5 to 10 seconds every 15 to 30 minutes to imitate orchid’s natural environment and protect seedlings and cuttings from fatal water stress. Also ensure seedlings and cuttings receive plenty of nutrition and can thrive naturally!
